Application of model based systems engineering to brownfield signalling and train control replacement

Overview
The replacement of the signalling and train control systems on Sydney’s heavy-rail network is envisaged to take years and affect many systems across the operational railway. To effectively manage the complexity and risk of this undertaking in a rigorous and consistent manner, Systems Engineering was applied early in the project lifecycle. This presentation will step through the real-life application of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) on the conceptual design stage of Transport for New South Wales’ Digital Systems Program through the lens of a consulting Systems Engineer. It will touch on the purpose of the modelling effort, its planning, execution and delivered outcomes, as well as provide commentary on practical lessons-learnt, pitfall avoidance and benefits of applying MBSE.

About the speaker
Donovan Roodt
Biography
Donovan is a Chartered Professional Systems Engineer with over 20 years of experience modelling, specifying, designing, and delivering technically complex, high-value systems to clients in the transport and defence sectors. These include military aviation, Electronic Warfare, Heavy Rail, Metro, Light-Rail and High-Speed Rail Systems. He has had the privilege of working on major projects such as the TfNSW Digital Systems Program, Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport, Parramatta Light Rail, Sydney Trains Electrical Isolations Improvement Program, UrbanLeap Suburban Rail Loop bid, and High-Speed Rail Network Rail Operations Planning. He is particularly interested in using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) as an integral part of the Digital Engineering approach to enhance the Systems Engineering rigour and impact.
