2020 Mentoring Program Recap
Last year, the focus of our SE community mentoring program was a 4-week networking opportunity. Many Early Career members were keen to meet and ask questions about SE with people outside of their org chart, and we found that a few “Ask an Expert” sessions before starting the mentoring helped them break the ice, identified areas of growth and support, and also helped everyone find the ‘right’ mentor-mentee pair/group.
The “Ask an Expert” sessions were held on 4:30-5:30 on Wednesday afternoons. We allowed flexibility but encouraged mentors and mentees to commit to attending at least 3 sessions.
The 2020 sessions included:
- Session 1: System Engineering Domains
- introduction by John Nasr, SESA President
- mentors grouped by industry/domain
- Session 2: System Engineering Life Cycle
- introduction by Helen Williams, SESA Chief Value Officer – TBC
- mentors grouped by expertise in INCOSE Technical Competencies
- Session 3: Systems Thinking in SE
- introduction by Grace Kennedy, University of Wollongong
- mentors grouped by expertise in INCOSE Core/Management Competencies
- Session 4: Finding a Mentor
- introduction by Dr Richard Hodge
- “speed dating” session for participants
- Optional additional session: Mentoring tips and tricks
- facilitated by Teeshal Bal, Metro Trains Melbourne
- 45 minute mentor focused session, followed by 15 minute mentor-mentee session and networking
After the 4 sessions, we matched people, with the intention that there would be a commitment between mentor pairs from September through to early December. We know that there are some mentor pairs out there that are still continuing their mentor relationship today, almost a year later!
