SUMMARY:Standing up and sustaining a digital engineering environment for systems engineers
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\nIn today’s increasingly complex engineering landscapes\, the traditional document-centric approach to systems development is no longer sufficient to keep pace with stakeholder demands\, system complexity\, and rapid iteration cycles. Digital Engineering (DE) offers a transformational approach — integrating models\, data\, and digital artifacts across the system lifecycle to enable better decision-making\, increased traceability\, and improved collaboration.  However\, standing up a Digital Engineering environment is not simply a matter of acquiring new tools or technology. It demands a fundamental shift in culture\, processes\, governance\, and workforce skills. Sustaining that environment over time requires strategic planning\, strong leadership\, continuous capability development\, and alignment with evolving organizational and program needs. Many organizations struggle not just with initial implementation\, but with the ongoing operationalization and value realization of their DE initiatives.  For systems engineers\, who are often at the nexus of technical\, programmatic\, and stakeholder concerns\, understanding how to stand up and sustain a digital engineering environment is now a critical professional competency. It empowers them to better manage complexity\, enhance collaboration\, and deliver superior system outcomes.  This session will provide practical insights and proven strategies for systems engineers seeking to establish and maintain a Digital Engineering environment within their organizations or projects. Through a use case of designing a 4WD camping adventure\, the presentation will explain the concepts related to the setting up and ongoing use of a modelling approach\, with outputs from both Capella’s Arcadia and Enterprise Architect toolsets. \nLearning Outcomes: \n\nIn this presentation\, you will: \n\nUnderstand the components and processes required to successfully establish a Digital Engineering (DE) environment that supports systems engineering practices across the product lifecycle.\nGain insight into the governance framework that ensures data integrity and model integration.\nLearn strategies for sustaining and scaling a DE environment\, and ensuring ongoing alignment with organisation objectives for a DE environment\n\nProgram Outline: \n\nOnline \n\n5.30 pm – Webinar begins\n6.30 pm – Webinar concludes \nIn-Person \n\n5.00 pm – Guest arrival & networking\n5.30 pm – Presentation begins\n6.30 pm – Presentation concludes\n7.30 pm – Event concludes \nRegistration Link \nSpeakers \n\nGreg Paulson \n\nPrincipal Consult\, HKRP Australia\n\nGreg has extensive experience in large infrastructure projects across various engineering organisations. SUMMARY:INCOSE Enchantment Chapter meeting - One Model to Rule them All ... and Through Emergence Bind Them
DESCRIPTION:The next INCOSE Enchantment Chapter meeting webinar\nThursday\, December 12\, 2024\, 9:45am-12:00pm AEDT. \nMeeting Program: One Model to Rule them All … and Through Emergence Bind Them \nAbstract: Models are central to understanding systems and to the engineering of systems. Systems engineers employ various types of models to communicate and establish shared understanding of a system\, and employ life-cycle models that enable the transformation of conceptual models to physical models\, that are then realized as tangible systems of benefit to society. The recognition of the central nature of models to the engineering of systems resulted in the forming of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) wherein the essence of the system of interest is contained within a system model in contrast to traditional documents. However\, the evolution of model-types employed\, both to understand and to engineer systems\, appears to largely have been a pragmatic activity driven by the needs of the numerous individual engineering and management subdisciplines. This presentation will briefly examine extant taxonomy of systems models used in the engineering of systems and in establishing an understanding of operational systems and considers the question of whether there is a suitable system “meta-model” that naturally “contains” all types of systems models used therein. It will explore this question through a systems-thinking lens\, in conjunction with concepts on mental models from biology and philosophy. This analysis gives rise to a framework for systems models and to the proposition that all (systems) models take on one of two forms: as reference models that aid in the engineering of systems or as representative models that aid in understanding operational systems. The concluding proposition being that it is possible to propose an emergent “model of systems models” that combines these two (reference and representative) forms of systems models in an evolutionary way. This construct is offered for consideration and refinement by the systems community. \nSpeaker: Jawahar Bhalla (JB) is a passionate Systems professional with 30+ years’ experience and president of INCOSE’s Australian chapter (SESA). He contributes to the advancement of Systems Thinking\, SE and M&S with 27 published papers. He a Fellow of Engineers Australia\, with a BE (Aerospace Engineering)\, a BSc (Computer Science)\, a Master’s in SE and is a PhD candidate working on a Framework for the Engineering and Assurance of AI-Intensive systems. He has served on the Board of Simulation Australasia and was recognised in 2021 with the “Ray Page Lifetime Achievement Award” for an outstanding contribution to the advancement of M&S in the Australasian region. \n  \nJoin Zoom Meeting – https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84508497254?pwd=IW1DLjrWbBPO2XYuLxBy3whmM6oy01.1 \nMeeting ID: 845 0849 7254 \nPasscode: 213067

The MTP will use PSDs in all the five new underground stations\, aligning the MTP with other similar projects/ metro style systems in use throughout the world. \nThe doors will improve the customer experience by improving safety and security (restricting track access and the likelihood of passengers being struck by the train)\, and also improving climate control within the stations. \nHowever\, during the reference design\, it was identified that the use of PSDs might introduce a potential hazard of entrapment between the PSDs and train doors and the body of the train\, and this hazard and the associated risk would be assessed and managed during the delivery phase. \nIn accordance with Australian Rail Safety National Law and following the guidance of EN 17168\, this presentation identifies the three entrapment hazards relating to PSDs and considers how they were identified and mitigated as part of the SFAIRP process managed by Rail Projects Victoria and Metro Trains Melbourne. \nDate: 6 March 2024 (Wed) \nTime: 5.00 to 6.00 pm (AEST) \nFormat: Virtual \nRegistration Link: https://incose-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/6817089903878/WN_v4DwJN-vQTKG2SNunDKBbQ \nFor more information please contact: Victoria@sesa.org.au \n  \n \nAnthony Pickett \nDirector\, Catus Consult \nA Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers\, with 40 years’ experience on multidisciplinary projects in the rail industry worldwide.  Previously Head of Technical Safety for RPV\, responsible for the effective establishment and delivery of the Technical Safety Management processes within RPV across the complete portfolio of Projects. \n  \n \nRob Hammer \nDirector\, MTP Engineering & Route to Acceptance \nRob has worked in the rail industry for over 15 years\, spanning projects across the entire Project Lifecycle and incorporating senior management roles across Design and Engineering\, Assurance and Delivery. Rob has spent the last seven years at Rail Projects Victoria\, including leading the Engineering and Integration Group across the RPV portfolio and more recently as Director of Engineering and Route to Acceptance on the Metro Tunnel Project. \n  \n  \nKevin Prendergast \nDirector Fleet SME\, Transport for NSW \nKevin has worked in the rail industry for over 30 years – his experience encompasses the design\, delivery\, operation and maintenance of rolling stock and has worked in European and Australian settings. More recently Kevin worked in an integration role in RPV\, coordinating the integration and assurance of Melbourne Metro Tunnel’s infrastructure disciplines to the new HCMT trains. SUMMARY:ANZSYS on Digital Transformation
DESCRIPTION:ANZSYS 7pm AEST on Digital Transformation with Prof Roelien Goede\nJoin Prof Roelien Goede\, previous ISSS President\, online at 7PM AEST  MONDAY 23 Oct 2023. \n“Is digital transformation empowering or suffocating us? A critical systems heuristics perspective” \nThe link for this meeting is: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86738609042?pwd=KbJAKrmb2D3JugUxTvkKSzZxQnRmag.1 \nBackground\nDigital transformation is changing the way we do our everyday work. A question worth exploring is what is the impact of this change? \nAre we more productive\, less irritated\, and more content in the workplace? Or are we suffocating from yet another new tool? Frustrated from struggling to do what we did seamlessly yesterday? \nFrom a critical systems perspective\, one should reflect on the purpose\, the process\, and the intended and unintended consequences of digital transformation in the organisation. A holistic approach is required to understand both the social and technological driving forces and the impact of this latest wave of change confronting our everyday work life. \nCritical systems thinking guides us to consider different perspectives in the problem situation. It guides us to consider the consequences of our plans on those affected\, but not involved\, in the decision-making process; to identify those factors which we cannot control but which have a dramatic impact on the success of our endeavours; to identify which expertise is required\, both technological and social to achieve the benefit of a proposed transformation. Moreover\, it guides us in putting ourselves in the shoes of others\, and then not only in the shoes of the workforce but also in the shoes of organisational management. \nThis address will consider digital transformation in the organisation from different perspectives. As an early adopter\, I’m always optimistic about improved technology.  I will attempt to provide a balanced view from multiple perspectives on the drive for digital transformation. I aim to provide the reality check required by a workforce under ever-increasing pressure to change and provide guidance to organisational leaders from my own project work on digital transformation. \nPlease join us. \nBio\n \nRoelien Goede is a professor in Computer Science and Information Systems at the North-West University\, Potchefstroom in South Africaand immediate past president of the ISSS. She is the Director for the Research Unit of Data Science and Computing at the NWU.  She has a PhD from the University of Pretoria in the field of Systems Practice in Business Intelligence. \nRoelien has various publications in the application of Critical Systems Thinking. She has been actively involved in the ISSS from 2014\, and a member of the BoD from 2016. Besides being the current ISSS President\, she is the Special Integration Group chair for Action Research. \nANZSYS Conversations\nFor more details of past and future ANZSYS Conversations go to www.anzsys.org \nVideos\nVideos of previous ANZSYS Conversations are available HERE. \nMeeting link\nThe link for this meeting is: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86738609042?pwd=KbJAKrmb2D3JugUxTvkKSzZxQnRmag.1

SUMMARY:System Integration - Simon MacMull
DESCRIPTION:System integration is the process of bringing together separate system elements to create a unified solution. While some industries that embrace systems engineering work well and intently understand the process\, other industries struggle with the “right side of the V”\, which is impacted early in the project through implementation from the left of the V. This presentation will provide insight into the challenges of integration\,  and how these challenges can be effectively managed delivering better systems outcomes. \nWho: Simon MacMull\, Technical Director Rail\, Mott Macdonald \nWhen: Wednesday 13th September at 17:30 – 18:30 AEST (30 minutes of presentation and 30 minutes or Q&A). \nWhere: WebEx and In person at EA Melbourne Office. Please contact victoria@sesa.org.au for all details to attend the event in person or online. \nBonus: Join SESA’s Victoria branch at a local venue after the event to continue the discussion!

SUMMARY:Australasian Simulation Congress (ASC) 2023
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open! Visit the Simulation Congress website for details. \nSESA has partnered with Simulation Australasia (SimAust) to deliver an integrated transdisciplinary conference/workshop event in the form of the Australasian Simulation Congress (ASC) 2023. With a theme of “Life between reality and simulation”\, ASC 2023 will be held from the 21st to the 24th August at the Adelaide Convention Centre and will be immediately followed by the Defence Test and Evaluation (T&E) Conference on Friday the 25th of August. \nSimAust are a like-minded association of professionals with a focus on modelling and simulation (M&S)\, something that is increasingly being recognised as a foundational part of the system life cycle. Partnering with SimAust at the ASC 2023 will mean access to a large contingent of diverse\, relevant presentations and keynotes\, and a larger scale event. \nAs this conference will be the major event for SESA in 2023\, we will again (as in the past) partner with the southern cross chapter of the International Test & Evaluation Association (ITEA)\, with the event being part conference (SETE) and part workshop (ASEW). We have some great keynotes being lined up\, so be assured that this event will be on a scale that SESA has not seen before (outside of IS events). \nThe program is out now!
