He presently works with Toll Aviation\, where he leverages UAV technology to solve real-world challenges for both civilian and defence aviation customers\, with a particular focus on enterprise drone operations\, technical integration\, and training. \nHe has contributed to several projects from concept to completion\, including active involvement in Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operational development\, where he provided practical test data\, operational feedback\, and risk assessments to support approvals processes. He has also overseen improvements in operational compliance\, helping reduce breaches against aviation safety and organisational standards through training\, standardisation\, and technical oversight. \nBen has many years of experience leading UAV training exercises for clients across defence\, mining\, energy\, construction\, agriculture\, and forestry. His training has included scenario-based drills and real-world simulation activities\, ensuring clients are prepared for operational demands while improving safety\, efficiency\, and mission success rates. \nPreviously\, Ben was a Ground Support Operator at Wing\, where he managed a fleet of 100+ drones for delivery operations. He supported more than 2\,000 deliveries per week across Logan City Council\, ensuring operational safety\, regulatory compliance\, and fleet readiness in one of the world’s first large-scale drone delivery services. Ben is currently completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electronic & UAV Engineering at Griffith University. \nAdam Henrichs \n\nDirector of Advanced Development at Rheinmetall Defence Australia \n\nAdam Henrichs is a defence technology leader with deep expertise in command\, control\, communications\, computers and intelligence (C4I) systems\, advanced development\, and autonomous capabilities. He is currently Director of Advanced Development at Rheinmetall Defence Australia\, where he leads innovation and capability exploration across emerging technologies. \nAdam brings more than a decade of experience spanning systems engineering\, architecture\, and integration roles within both industry and defence programs. At Rheinmetall\, he has served as C4ISREW System Architect and C4I Lead delivering next-generation capabilities. He has also contributed as a C4I Engineering Consultant across major programs including LAND 400 and AIR 6500\, and previously held senior engineering and integration roles at Boeing Defence Australia\, working on JP2072 and other critical defence communications projects. \nWith a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering from QUT\, Adam combines strong technical foundations with strategic insight into complex\, networked defence environments. His career has consistently focused on delivering mission-ready solutions that enhance operational effectiveness\, from systems integration to advanced concept development.

SUMMARY:Solving Green Hydrogen delivery with Systems Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Hydrogen is the key to unlocking accelerated energy transition switching for heavy industry\, trucking\, maritime\, rail and aviation\, but storage is hard\, and it’s holding the entire hydrogen economy back. A Green Hydrogen Start-up is solving storage\, with their breakthrough advanced nanoporous materials at the centre\, and enabling sustainable end-to-end ecosystems\, delivering efficient\, safe and low-cost hydrogen\, to precipitate a rapidly growing\, potentially multi-trillion-dollar market by 2050. Systems Engineering practices have been implemented to ensure the most efficient pathway to achieve a safe and reliable product in the start-up environment. This talk will cover: \n\nThe hydrogen supply chain ecosystem and the mission;\nThe rationale for embedding systems engineering in a technology start-up environment;\nThe implementation approach and the tools used; and\nLessons learnt on the journey so far. SUMMARY:Standing up and sustaining a digital engineering environment for systems engineers
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\nIn today’s increasingly complex engineering landscapes\, the traditional document-centric approach to systems development is no longer sufficient to keep pace with stakeholder demands\, system complexity\, and rapid iteration cycles. Digital Engineering (DE) offers a transformational approach — integrating models\, data\, and digital artifacts across the system lifecycle to enable better decision-making\, increased traceability\, and improved collaboration.  However\, standing up a Digital Engineering environment is not simply a matter of acquiring new tools or technology. It demands a fundamental shift in culture\, processes\, governance\, and workforce skills. Sustaining that environment over time requires strategic planning\, strong leadership\, continuous capability development\, and alignment with evolving organizational and program needs. Many organizations struggle not just with initial implementation\, but with the ongoing operationalization and value realization of their DE initiatives.  For systems engineers\, who are often at the nexus of technical\, programmatic\, and stakeholder concerns\, understanding how to stand up and sustain a digital engineering environment is now a critical professional competency. Systems engineers employ various types of models to communicate and establish shared understanding of a system\, and employ life-cycle models that enable the transformation of conceptual models to physical models\, that are then realized as tangible systems of benefit to society. The recognition of the central nature of models to the engineering of systems resulted in the forming of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) wherein the essence of the system of interest is contained within a system model in contrast to traditional documents. However\, the evolution of model-types employed\, both to understand and to engineer systems\, appears to largely have been a pragmatic activity driven by the needs of the numerous individual engineering and management subdisciplines. This presentation will briefly examine extant taxonomy of systems models used in the engineering of systems and in establishing an understanding of operational systems and considers the question of whether there is a suitable system “meta-model” that naturally “contains” all types of systems models used therein. It will explore this question through a systems-thinking lens\, in conjunction with concepts on mental models from biology and philosophy. This analysis gives rise to a framework for systems models and to the proposition that all (systems) models take on one of two forms: as reference models that aid in the engineering of systems or as representative models that aid in understanding operational systems. The concluding proposition being that it is possible to propose an emergent “model of systems models” that combines these two (reference and representative) forms of systems models in an evolutionary way. This construct is offered for consideration and refinement by the systems community. \nSpeaker: Jawahar Bhalla (JB) is a passionate Systems professional with 30+ years’ experience and president of INCOSE’s Australian chapter (SESA). Eryn’s current role is managing the Human Factors speciality within the Human Performance team at Anglo American’s Steelmaking Coal business which has five operational coal mines in Queensland. Key integration areas include\, management of change\, automation design and incident investigations. Prior to Anglo\, Eryn worked at Boeing Defence Australia as a Senior Human Factors Specialist involved in the Human Factors integration and verification phases for multiple systems. Eryn is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Queensland in the Mining Industry Safety and Health Centre(MISHC)\, where her goal is to inspire the next generation of human factors professionals by fostering a deeper understanding of human-centered design for complex systems and its importance to proactive safety management.

DESCRIPTION:Presentation Synopsis \nJoin us for a presentation and discussion on the risk management approach that was used during the Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project (MTP) Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) delivery to mitigate the risk of passenger entrapment. \nThe MTP is building two new 9km tunnels through the heart of the CBD.
